Hope and Courage is a powerful and evocative story of tragedy and abuse, but also of hope and redemption. It was hard to read at times with its brutality and R rated scenes, but those were integral to the story and a counterpoint to the potential for healing. Paw showed great insight into the human psyche, frailties, and the longing for love and connection. I was drawn in by the author’s compassion and by the strong emotional pull of the main character, Buster Hudson. Like a Dean Koontz novel, this book had an overarching theme of forgiveness and transcendence that I found compelling.As a child, Buster escaped from torment through his writing. Would the mature Buster find the profound healing he sought? Could he forgive himself and others in order to move forward to healing and finding a loving relationship? That is the journey that kept me turning the pages. I was drawn into Buster’s terrifying world and was rooting for him from the start.
There were grammatical flaws but that did not distract me from the flow and power of the story. It was truly a story of “hope and courage:” hope for a loving relationship and courage to move through darkness toward forgiveness that could lead to a profound healing.
I gave this book 5 stars for the powerful emotional content, the depth of understanding of the human condition, and Paw’s eloquent passages on the will to overcome extreme adversity.
